Police Quest 3: The Kindred
Police Quest 3: The Kindred is the third instalment of the popular adventure game Police Quest. It was produced by Jim Walls and published by Sierra On-Line in 1991.
Unlike the previous two games Police Quest 3 uses a point and click interface. You’ll be able to use the mouse to interact with objects in the environment and in your inventory. The driving interface has been simplified, although you’ll still need to manually drive from location to location. There’s a map below which shows you the layout of Lytton.
Sonny and Marie have been married and Sonny has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant. You’ll have to give briefings to the police officers as well as hit the streets for regular patrols. The walkthrough below includes a full run down of how to complete Police Quest 3: The Kindred.

Police Quest 3 Walkthrough
Day 1
Lytton Police Station
You begin the game on the 2nd floor of the Lytton Police Station. Click on the lift button and take the lift to the 1st floor. Open the door on the left to the closet and take the batteries and the flares.
Walk into the men’s room and open the center locker in the middle stack of lockers. You’re locker combination is 776. Take the flashlight, notebook and nightstick. Close the locker and leave the men’s room.
Click on the lift button and take the lift to the 2nd floor. Go through the door on the left and look at the basket on your desk (the desk on the right side) to find a Disciplinary Action Form. The note attached asks you to interview Officer Pat Morales. Leave the room and walk down the hall to the right.
Go through the open door to the briefing room. Use the talk icon on Officer Morales twice and then pick up the clipboard on the left side of the podium to begin the briefing. Leave the room, walk back to the left and go through the left door to your office. Pat Morales will be waiting there for you.
After the investigation you’re to make a report. Select “sustained“. Look in your basket again for a Requisition Form for a computer access card. Leave the room and take the lift to the 3rd floor.
Give the Requisition Form to the Head Technician sitting at the desk. He puts a new card on his desk. Pick up the computer access card and then take the lift to the 2nd floor.
Enter the room on the left and and wait until you receive a message to call dispatch. Use the phone and press the DISPATCH button. You’ll be told to investigate Aspen Falls. Leave the room and take the lift down to the ground floor. Get in the patrol car and drive to Aspen Falls. You get there by driving all the way south to River Rd and then east to Aspen Falls.
Aspen Falls
When you arrive you’ll see a family having a picnic. A lady holding a child will tell you about a lunatic. Walk off the screen to the right and you’ll see a man dancing around in his underwear.
The man starts flailing at you and throws your badge in the river. When the man jumps into the water search through his clothes to find a set of keys and his driver’s license.
Throw the keys into the river. The man will come out to attack you. Grab your nightstick and hit him with it when he gets close enough. Use your cuffs to handcuff the man and take him back to your patrol car.
Click on the man to search him and you’ll find a knife hidden in his underwear. Put the man in the car, get in and drive back to the police station.
Lytton Police Station
Click on the lockers next to the glass doors and open one of them. Place your gun in the locker, close it and take the key. Go through the doors and give the suspect’s license to the officer behind the window. Give the knife to the officer as well.
When asked what you’re booking the suspect for type in 05150 for not being in control of himself. Take your handcuffs from the drawer and the officer will tell you that Officer Morales has requested you at the 7th Avenue on ramp. Leave the jail and take your gun from the locker. Get in your car and drive along the highway eastbound towards the location.
Highway
When you speak to Officer Morales she’ll tell you that the suspect is refusing to sign. Use the talk icon on the left side of the red car to speak with the woman.
The woman claims that Officer Morales insulted her. When Officer Morales asks you what you want to do respond with “Signature” so that you can witness her failure to sign. Get back in your patrol car and continue patrolling the highway.
When you get overtaken by a speeding white car turn on your siren, pull into the same lane and drive up behind it. The driver will pull over when he sees your lights.
Walk over to the driver and speak with him. You’ll ask for his license and registration. Once he gives you his license and his excuse hop back into your patrol car and use his license on the computer.
Fill out a Form 900. You’ll need to enter the right time and the vehicle code which is 22349. Grab the ticket once it’s printed, get out of your car and give the driver the ticket. Return to your patrol car and start cruising the highway once more.
Pretty soon a speeding black car will drive past you. Turn your siren on once more and follow the car. Look at the car to find it’s number plate. Use the computer and type in the plate ID: 12896. This is an allied agent. Turn off your siren and let him go.
Continue patrolling the highway until you see a slow vehicle in the fast lane. Turn on your siren and slow down. The driver will pull over to the left.
Approach the vehicle and speak with the driver. He’ll give you his driver’s license and registration. Walk back to your car and use his license on the computer. Use the Form 900 and type in the time and vehicle code which is 21654. Take the ticket, leave the car and give the driver the ticket.
Hop back into your car and continuing patrolling until you see a car weaving across the road. Turn on your siren and pull him over.
Walk up to the driver and speak with him. This man has obviously been drinking. Talk to him again to ask him to step out of the vehicle. Move your finger from side to side to perform a test.
After patting him down use your cuffs to arrest him and put him in the patrol car. Get back in the car and drive to the police station.
Lytton Police Station
Get out of the car and put your gun in the top left locker. Enter the jail and remove the cuffs from the drunk. Use the machine on the counter to the right to take his alcohol reading. Take the ticket and give it to the officer behind the window.
Click on the door and book him for code violation: 23152. After he’s placed in a cell you’ll be shown a cut-scene of Marie getting off work. She’s stabbed by two guys in the parking lot.
Leave the jail, grab your gun and use lift to go to the 2nd floor. Enter your office on the left and use the phone to call DISPATCH. You’ll get a message to respond to an assault at Oak Tree Mall which is located at the east end of Rose Street.
Leave the office and take the lift down to the ground floor. Enter the patrol car and drive to the Oak Tree Mall.
Oak Tree Mall
Marie has been badly injured. Click on the chain that she’s holding in her hand to grab it. It’s from one of the attackers. You’ll take the ambulance to the hospital where Marie remains in a coma. After speaking with the neurosurgeon walk out of the hospital room and you’ll be back at the crime scene.
A reporter will approach you. Talk to him and he’ll give you his business card.
Open your inventory and use the batteries with the flashlight. Use the flashlight and look around the car. You’ll notice a Bronze Star medallion. Pick it up and get back into your patrol car.
Day 2
Home
At midday you’ll get a call from the captain to come back into work. After your shower take the music box from the cupboard and then leave the house to drive back to the station.
Lytton Police Station
Take the lift to the 2nd floor and walk into the Captain’s office on the right. He gives you the number for Marie’s case which is 199144 and the number for a similar case which is 199137. He’ll also give you a new partner, Pat Morales.
After the captain leaves speak with the other officers and then sit down at your new desk. Turn on the computer. Open your inventory and use the computer access card in the slot above the disk drive. Go to the Homicide tab and enter to serial number 09987 to learn about the Bronze Star. You’ll see that it was awarded to Samuel Britt and it has a case number 199124. Now you have three cases to check out.
Review the cases 199124, 199144 and 199137. Turn off the computer after you’ve read through the cases and use the phone to the left of the computer. Dial 555-0707 to talk to the reporter who gave you his business card.
Leave the office and take the lift to the ground floor. Open the trunk of the white car and place the flares in the empty box. Go through the door to the evidence room and place the chain in the box under the window. When the officer asks for the case number type in: 199144.
Next place the Bronze Star in the evidence window and give the case number: 199124. After handing in the evidence you call it a day and go to the hospital to visit Marie.
Hospital
Enter the flower shop and talk to the lady. Show her your wallet to purchase a rose. Leave the flower shop and speak with the lady at the counter to find out what room Marie is staying in.
Use the lift and take it to see Marie. Give her the rose and the music box. This will bring her back to life. Click on her to give her a kiss and then leave the room. Leave the hospital, you’ll drive home and the day will end.
Day 3
Lytton Police Station
Take the lift to the 2nd floor and enter the door on the right. Check the basket on your desk for a message from Carla Reed who has something for you. Leave the office and take the lift down to the ground floor. Jump into your white car and drive to 325 South Second Street.
325 South Second Street
When you get out of the car you’ll be in an alleyway. Talk to the lady sleeping on the ground. Show her your ID and she’ll talk to you. She won’t come to the police station with her cart. Use your cuffs on the cart to secure it to a pipe and she’ll come back with you to the station.
Lytton Police Station
Pick up the lunch on the desk behind yours and give it to Carla. Turn on your computer and use the computer access card in the slot. Switch to the DCM (Drawing Composite Menu) and you can start putting together the face based on Carla’s description.
When you are done click on Search Composite to come up with a list of suspects that fit the description. Carla will point out Steve Rocklin with ID number 493027. He’s currently on probation. Quit and talk to Carla again. You’ll take Carla back to the alley. Grab your cuffs and then hop into the car.
On the way back to the station Pat wants to hop out at the mall to make a phone call. Once she’s done hop pack into the car and you’ll head home.
Day 4
Back at the Lytton Police Department take the lift to the 2nd floor. Enter your office on the right. Look in the basket on your desk to find a subpoena. Leave and get in the patrol car. Open the glovebox and take out the speedometer readings. Get out and drive the white car to court.
Court
Enter the court and you’ll take your seat at the witness table. Speak to the man who questions you and then show him the speedometer readings. After the defendant is found guilty get back into your car.
Mall
Pat will want to take a trip to the mall again. This time she leaves her purse. Take the key from her purse and get out of the car. Enter Zaks, the key maker, and hand him Pat’s key. He’ll make you a copy of the key. Pay the man and then get back into your car. Before Pat returns place her original key back on her purse.
Before you can leave you’ll get a call to go to 300 West Rose. Drive to the location.
300 West Rose
You’ll stop at an alley with a dead body in a dumpster. After Pat takes a photo of the crime scene open the trunk and then take out all of the items from your field kit. Click on the body to take a closer look.
Use the notebook on the body to write down all the information. Use the hand icon on the body to search the body and find his ID. Use the toothpick on the fingernails to take a sample and then exit.
Take a look at the dumped white car and use the scraper to get a sample of the gold paint from the side of the car. Go back to your trunk and put the scraper, toothpicks and empty container back into the field kit. Get back into your car and drive to the police station.
Lytton Police Station
Take the lift to your office and look at the basket on your desk. You have a memo from Dr. Wagner who wants you to stop by the hospital.
Sit down at your desk, turn on the computer and use your computer access card in the slot. Click on Homiced and open up a new case for the Andrew Dent murder.
Leave the office and take the lift back to the ground floor. Go into the evidence room and book the two samples from the murder scene. When asked type in the case number: 199145.
Leave and get into your white car. Pat will come with you. Drive to the hospital to visit Marie.
Hospital
Enter the hospital and take the lift to see Marie. After the doctor talks to you take the chart at the foot of the bed to look at it. It shows the IV dosage is supposed to be set at 0.005.
Look at Marie. Look at the IV readout which shows 0.015. It’s too high. Press the red button on the wall to call the nurse and then click on Marie to give her a kiss. When the nurse arrives talk to her to tell her that the IV dosage is too high. Leave the hospital to end the day.
Day 5
Lytton Police Station
Take the lift to your office on the 2nd floor. Use your computer and insert the computer access card. Look at the evidence that’s been added to case 199145 and then switch over to the Tools/City Map tabs. From here you can plot the locations of the murders.
The known locations are 341 East Rose, 280 West Palm, 392 South Sixth Street and 276 West Rose. Connect the points so that you draw a pentagram.
Quit, pick up the phone and dial DISPATCH. Hang up the phone and look at the board to your left. You’ll notice there’s a physical performance test for female officers tomorrow morning. Leave the office and walk to the right. Enter the door on the right which is the psychologist’s office.
Pick up the file on the desk. This is the personnel file of Pat Morales. Leave the office, walk back to the left and take the lift to the 3rd floor.
Click on the cabinet to see what equipment is available. Take the tracking device from the drawer. Take the lift down to the ground floor.
Get in your white car and Pat will follow you. Drive to 200 East Palm which is the probable location of the next murder.
200 East Palm
When you get out you’ll notice a beat up gold car. Look at the car to see that it’s missing it’s license plates and has a scraping of white paint on it.
Open the trunk of your vehicle and take out the items from the field kit. Use the scraper on the side of the gold car to take a sample of the paint. Use the tracking device on the vehicle and then enter the Old Nugget.
You need to wait around for the second billiard player to arrive. You can talk to everyone while you wait if you like. Take a look at the second billiard player. It’s Steve Rocklin. Take your gun out from your inventory and click Steve with it when he pulls his gun. He’ll make a run for it and drive off in his car.
Get in the car and turn on your tracking device which is the little green monitor on your dashboard. Follow the car onto the highway until it stops.
Highway
Steve has crashed his car. Open your trunk and take out the flares. Place the flares on the road to warn upcoming motorists.
Look at the body and take the keys. Wait for the ambulance to arrive and then use the key on the trunk of Steve’s car. Several packets of cocaine will fall out. Click on the packets and Pat will say she’ll deal with it. Get back in the car and drive to the police station.
Lytton Police Station
Take the lift to the 2nd floor and enter your office. Use the copy of Marie’s key on the drawer of her desk. You’ll notice a bit of paper with numbers on it: 386.
Look at the basket on your desk to see a note form the doctor to see Marie every day. Leave the office and take the lift down to the ground floor.
Open the trunk of your white car and place the items back in your field kit. Enter the evidence room and book the sample that you took. Use the case number: 199145.
Leave and get in your white car. Drive to the hospital.
Hospital
Take the lift to see Marie once more. Once you leave the day will end.
Day 6
Lytton Police Station
Take the lift to the 1st floor and enter the men’s room. Take all of the paper from the middle stall and put it in the toilet bowl. Leave and talk to the janitor and he’ll go in to fix it.
Enter the ladies toilet and open the right locker on the left block of lockers. Use Marie’s code which is 386. Inside you find two packets of cocaine. Use the notebook on the packets to make a note of it.
Leave and take the lift to the 2nd floor. Enter your office and talk to the captain. He tells you the coroner wants to see you.
Leave the office and take the lift to the ground floor. Hop in the white car and drive to the coroner’s office.
Coroner’s Office
Enter the building and pick up the envelope on the counter in the bottom right corner of the screen. Look at it in your inventory to find a cult ring, a cult book and Marie’s locket.
Wait for the coroner to arrive. He shows you a news clipping he found on the suspect. It shows your picture with a pentagram drawn over it. He also gives you the address of Steve Rocklin, 500 West Peach. Leave and drive to the hospital.
Hospital
Enter and take the lift to see Marie. Give the locket to Marie and she’ll open her eyes at last. Kiss her and then leave. While you’re driving you’ll get a message to head to a burning house at 500 West Peach.
500 West Peach
Talk to the firemen and then take all of the items out of the field kit in your trunk. Enter the house and pick up the photograph from the floor.
Walk down the hallway to the north and use the scraper on the blood in the pentagram to take a sample. Leave the house and put your things back in the field kit. Start driving the car again. Pat wants to visit the mall again.
Mall
Get out of the car and visit the army recruiting office. Show the recruiting officer your badge and then show him the photo of the Bains brothers. He’ll get you a printout of Michael Bains military record. Take the military record from the printer. Leave the office and get back in your car. Drive to the police station.
Lytton Police Station
Take the lift to the 2nd floor and walk to the right. Enter the psychologist’s office on the right and show the psychologist Bains military record.
Leave and take the elevator to the ground floor. Enter the evidence room and book the blood sample for case: 199145.
A close look at the Bains brother’s photo shows that it seems to be located 522 West Palm.
522 West Palm
When you arrive at West Palm knock on the door. Somebody’s home but they’re not answering. You’ll nee a warrant to enter the premises so drive to the court.
Court
Enter the building and show the news clipping to the judge. She wants more evidence so show her the photograph of the Bains brothers. She signs the warrant and places it on her desk. Pick it up and then leave the court.
522 West Palm
When you reach the location and try to enter the house no-one answers. You can’t deliver the warrant and will need backup so get back in the car and head back to court.
Court
Enter the court and speak with the judge again to request a special order. Pick up the judicial order and return to your car. Drive back to the crack house.
522 West Palm
This time when you get out you have plenty of backup, including a ram. Take out your gun and click it on yourself. The ram will break open the door.
Shoot the first man that rolls in and the other one will give up. Use your cuffs on the second man. Click on the cushion on the sofa to look underneath and find a remote control. Use the remote on the T.V. and press 8. A secret passage will open up.
Walk through the secret passage and once more take out your gun. When the man arrives from the left side of the screen shoot him. Pat will enter and go over to check his vital signs. Instead she grabs the gun and points it at you. Your backup will shoot her.
Hospital
Back at the hospital Marie has recovered and you can get on with your life together. Congratulations on completing Police Quest 3!
