Shadowrun Returns was designed by Jordan Weisman, who is the creature of the tabletop role-playing game Shadowrun. He wanted to give this game an “authentic tone”, making it true to the original RPG game.

Weisman for released the idea for the game as a Kickstarter campaign. The funding goal of $400,000 was met within just 28 hours. In total Shadowrun Returns received close to $2 million. When Shadowrun Returns was released in July of 2013 it received positive reviews and still has a ‘very positive’ rating on Steam with 90% of gamers giving it the thumbs up.

An expansion for Shadowrun Returns was released in 2014 called Shadowrun: Dragonfall. It’s now available as a standalone release. The next game in the series, Shadowrun: Hong Kong, was released by Hairbrained Schemes in 2015 using an upgraded version of the engine used for Shadowrun Returns.
